Durham College student-athletes earn prestigious national award
Cornwall, Ont. – The Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC) and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) announced the 2008-09 SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Award recipients on Monday and Durham College won top honours earning the SIRC/CCAA Academic All Canadian Recognition Award for having the most recipients of any institution across the country.
”We are extremely proud of receiving this prestigious award,” stated Ken Babcock, Director of Athletics. “The Academic All Canadian award is one of the toughest awards to obtain based on the criteria. This national recognition reflects how our student-athletes at Durham College strive for success in the classroom and their respective sports.”
With eight recipients receiving the honour this year, Durham College set an all-time high, breaking their past record of five award winners (2005/06 and 2007/08). This season, Anthony Batchelor (men’s basketball), Mandi Doris (women’s volleyball), Erin Emery (women’s basketball), Samantha Jansen (women’s basketball), Rob Lewis (men’s golf), James Mayer (men’s volleyball), Jessica Newton (women’s basketball), and Ashley Visser (women’s soccer and basketball) all received the recognition.
The SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Award is the CCAA’s most prestigious student-athlete award, epitomizing their mandate of recognizing excellence in academics and athletics. To achieve this honour, a student-athlete must be named to his/her respective Provincial All-Star teams in a CCAA Sport, and must achieve a GPA standing of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
The athlete’s achievements will be recognized at the 39th Annual Durham College Athletic Banquet on Friday, April 3rd at Trillium Trails in Oshawa, Ont. where representatives from the SIRC and CCAA will be on hand to present the awards.
“To achieve excellence in both sport and academics requires tremendous skill, dedication and perseverance. SIRC is honoured to recognize those outstanding collegiate student-athletes who are also passionate about excelling in their education,” expressed Debra Gassewitz, President and CEO, SIRC.
Durham College varsity athletes strive to be the best in athletics and academics having established themselves with championship caliber programs and high graduation rates. Today’s honour combined with the Lords success in their respective sports has solidified the college’s renowned reputation across the country.
“Both SIRC and the CCAA share a commitment to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the education purpose,” expressed Sandra Murray-MacDonell, CCAA Executive Director. “We are very proud to recognize and celebrate those student-athletes who’ve achieved academic and athletic excellence.”
