Perfection equals a provincial championship berth for Durham College
Vaughan, Ont. – The Durham College women’s indoor soccer team swept through round robin action on Tuesday afternoon at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Central East Region Championship, earning the Lords the regional crown. With the win, Durham will now advance to the OCAA provincial championship which is set to take place from March 26-27 at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont.
After missing out on the OCAA championship last season, it looks as if the Lords have regained their provincial powerhouse status after outscoring their opponents 11-1 in the four game round robin regional championship.
The Lords indoor program has been dominant over the past seven seasons, with the team winning two OCAA Championships (2003 and 2007) as well as one silver medal in 2005 and a bronze medal in 2004. The team has also won five regional titles during that span, winning in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007 and now in 2009.
Durham knew it would be a tough task earning a spot to the provincials, as the Central East is traditionally the toughest region in the OCAA with the league champion advancing from the region in three of the last four seasons.
In Durham’s opening match of the day, the Lords met up with George Brown College of Toronto. With the score level at 1-1, the Lords picked up a pair of quick back-to-back goals to put the team ahead for good, as they would win by a final score of 3-1. Jennifer Michalicka (Pickering, Ont.) scored two goals for Durham in the match.
Game two was much closer for the Lords, but the team still managed to pull out a “W” as they shutout Centennial College 1-0. Krista Metcalf (Newmarket, Ont.) was the lone goal scorer in the game, finding the back of the net at the 26 minute mark to give Durham their second win of the day.
The Lords went on a scoring spree in their next match which was against Canadore College, as they defeated the Panthers 6-0. Michalicka led the charge with four goals while Brittany Micucci (Newmarket, Ont.) netted two. Michalicka finished as the regional championship top scorer with six goals in four games.
In their final match of the round robin, DC was matched up against their outdoor soccer rival, the Seneca Sting. With Seneca needing a win to stay alive in the championship, Durham was able to shut the door shut on the Sting as they picked up a 1-0 victory, eliminating the North York squad from championship contention. Metcalf was once again the hero in the match, scoring the games only goal.
Veteran goalkeeper Ashley Visser (Uxbridge, Ont.) was spectacular in between the pipes for Durham in all four matches, allowing only one goal and earning three consecutive shutouts.
The Lords will now move on to the OCAA Championship, scheduled to take place from March 26-27 at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont. For all of the indoor soccer regional results, visit www.ocaa.com.
