EXCITING SEASON AHEAD FOR DURHAM COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL AND BASKETBALL
OSHAWA, Ont. – An All-Star game, Provincial Championship, invitational tournaments and plenty of great games will be on the docket as the schedules have been released for the 2008-09 Durham College Men’s and Women’s basketball and volleyball seasons.
New men’s basketball head coach Desmond Rowley and the rest of the team are excited about the upcoming season which will get underway with the David Stewart Tip Off Tournament at Durham College on October 17 and 18. After all of the preparation, the team will then open their OCAA regular season by hosting the Loyalist Lancers on Tuesday, October 21. Tip off time for the much anticipated home opener will be at 8:00 p.m.
Durham’s women’s basketball team will open their OCAA regular season as the first game of the doubleheader on Tuesday, October 21, as they host the Loyalist Lancers. A special tribute will be made prior to the game honouring former Lords standout Bonnie Slaughter who tragically passed away earlier this year. Also of note on the schedule will be the Durham College Big 8 Classic which is slated to run from November 14-15.
The basketball season at Durham College will wrap up with the 22nd annual Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) All-Star Games. The festivities will take place Saturday, March 28, 2009 and will consist of 3-point shooting competitions, the 2-ball event, the best mascot contest and ultimately the men’s and women’s All-Star Games. This will be the fourth consecutive year and 12th overall that Durham College has hosted the exciting day of basketball all-star action.
The Durham Lords men’s and women’s volleyball teams will have their share of excitement as well. The squads open their season at home with doubleheaders on back-to-back days. Friday, October 3 sees the Lords hosting the Algonquin Thunder with the women taking the floor at 6:00 p.m. and the men at 8:00 p.m. Prior to the women’s game, Durham College will honour legendary coach Stan Marchut. Saturday, October 4 brings the La Cite Coyotes to town for games at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Durham College also has been named as the host of the 2008-09 OCAA Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Championships. The best college volleyball talent in Ontario will descend upon Oshawa for two days, February 27-28, 2009, to see who will take home the Provincial Title.
The Durham College Killer Instinct Cup has become one of the most anticipated tournaments on the college volleyball circuit attracting the top teams from across the province. This season, the men’s tournament will run from October 24-25 while the women’s tournament is scheduled for January 9-10.
New this season, basketball and volleyball alumni games will run during their respective sport’s invitational tournaments. A full schedule of alumni games can be found on www.durhamlords.com.
