Day One of Killer Instinct Cup all wrapped up
Oshawa, Ont. – The first day of the 21st annual Killer Instinct Cup is in the books and a pair of squads from Quebec have taken early leads in round robin play heading into day two.
In Pool A action, the nationally ranked Lionel Groulx Nordiques of Ste-Thérèse, Québec went undefeated sweeping their opponents 6-0. Humber, who is also nationally ranked, trails the Nords by one point as they surprisingly split a match with the Mohawk Mountaineers to close out the day. In conference play this year, Humber has gone 10-0 without losing a single set. Even with the loss, Humber is still in good shape to advance to the semi-finals as they hold a two point lead over Mohawk.
Over in Pool B, Bois de Boulogne from Montreal leads the way with five points on the day. Durham, Niagara and St. Clair all trail the Cavaliers by just a single point, leaving the pool wide open heading into day two.
Durham got off to a hot start on Friday as they defeated East Region rival Loyalist College 2-0 (25-14, 25-17). In their next match against Bois de Boulogne, DC fought hard but fell short of a win as they were defeated 2-0 (25-23, 25-21). Looking to get back in the playoff hunt, the Lords bounced back nicely as they upended the Canadore Panthers 2-0 (25-14, 25-22) to finish up with four points and in a tie for second place. The Lords will look to secure a spot in the semi-finals as they take on St. Clair at 11 a.m. and Niagara at 2 p.m.
Round robin action will resume tomorrow morning with games starting at 9 a.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre with playoffs beginning at 3 p.m. The championship match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
This year marks the 21st anniversary of the Durham College women’s volleyball tournament and the 9th year in it’s current format. The DC Killer Instinct Cup has become highly regarded in the volleyball community and is one of the biggest and most anticipated invitational tournaments on the OCAA sports calendar.
