Lords stung on home court, winning streak comes to an end
Men’s Volleyball: Seneca defeated Durham 3-1 (25-21, 27-29, 25-16, 25-22)
Oshawa, Ont. – Less than a week after moving into the national rankings and winning an invitational title, the Durham Lords men’s volleyball team’s winning ways came to a halt as they were defeated 3-1 by the Seneca Sting on home court Thursday night. The loss snaps Durham’s conference winning streak at six games.
In what was a very competitive match, the Sting (9-2) managed to find a way to come out on top as they won by set scores of 25-21, 27-29, 25-16 and 25-22. With the loss, Durham (7-3) dropped to fourth place in the East Region trailing a trio of nine win teams (Algonquin, Seneca and Trent).
After splitting the first two sets, Durham fell apart in the third as they were defeated 25-16. Making costly mistakes which included two referee warnings resulting in points, Seneca took over the momentum in the set and ultimately took control of the game. The Lords managed to bounce back in set four and took a 19-17 lead, but a late 6-0 run by Seneca put away the game for good, sending the hometown crowd in disappointment.
Freshman Kevin Horne (Pickering, Ont.) had a breakout game for Durham scoring 24 points, 23 of which were kills. Jamie Mayer (Penetanguishene, Ont.) continued his great season with 20 points on the night. Mayer is third in East Region scoring with 115 points on the year.
Brian Archibald and JR Sapienza led the way in scoring for Seneca with 17 and 14 points respectively. Danny Mudford had a great defensive effort with 16 digs.
The Lords will look to regroup with a week of practice before heading to Ottawa for a pair of road games next weekend. The team’s next home action will not be until Tuesday, January 20 as they are set to meet Trent University at 8 p.m.
