Six straight wins for DC women’s volleyball
Women’s Volleyball – Durham defeated Georgian 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 27-25)
Barrie, Ont. – With a 3-0 sweep over Georgian College on Friday, the Durham Lords women’s volleyball team has won six straight matches and have clinched third place in the OCAA East Region.
Finishing in third place gives Durham home court advantage during the qualifying round of the OCAA playoffs. They will either meet up with Fanshawe, Sault or Redeemer, depending on the outcome of the remainder of the regular season. The home playoff game will take place on the weekend of February 14 at the CRWC.
In Friday night’s contest, Durham played well and found a way to pull out the win with set scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 27-25. Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.) and Kristen Conner (Oshawa, Ont.) were looked upon for offense as they each scored 11 kills in the match. Doris also added six blocks, bringing her record breaking career total to 154.
Steph Bagot (Barrie, Ont.) also had a good night for DC with five kills, one block and one ace while Kerri Fotherby (Newcastle, Ont.) scored nine points and added ten digs.
The Lords will be put to the test in their regular season finale on Wednesday, February 4 as they take on the first place Loyalist Lancers (16-2). First serve at the Lancerdome is at 6 p.m.
Oshawa will be on the radar for all collegiate volleyball teams heading into February as Durham College is set to host the 2008-09 OCAA Men’s and Women’s Provincial Volleyball Championships. The event will run at the CRWC from February 27-28, 2009.
