Mandi Doris of Durham College becomes the OCAA all-time block leader
Women’s Volleyball – Durham defeated Fleming 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-17)
Peterborough, Ont. – Bringing her career total to 148 blocks with four on Tuesday night, Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.) of the Durham College women’s volleyball team became the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s (OCAA) all-time career block leader. The milestone was earned during the Lords 3-0 sweep over the Fleming Knights, improving the team’s conference record to 13-5 this season.
The previous OCAA record of 147 blocks was held by Tracey Smith of Niagara College, who played four years for the Knights.
It has been an amazing season for Doris in her fourth year in a Lords uniform enroute to breaking the record. She has set career highs in kills (141), blocks (72), aces (21) and points (234) and continues to add to her numbers. Collecting an astounding 72 blocks this year, Doris has already broken the OCAA record for most blocks in a season.
Durham Lords first year head coach Shane Christopher commented after the game how big of an accomplishment this was Mandi and how she should be proud of her achievements.
With the win over Fleming, the Lords are now on a five game conference winning streak and are playing their best volleyball of the season heading down the stretch and into the playoffs. Durham has earned their third consecutive 3-0 victory and seventh sweep of the year.
Doris finished the game with 15 points on offense as she added 11 kills to her totals. Teammate Kristen Conner (Oshawa, Ont.) finished the night with nine points (six kills and three aces). Conner and Doris have made a terrific one-two punch in the Lords lineup as Conner leads the league in kills (192) while Doris leads the league in blocks (72).
The Lords will now turn their attention to Georgian College (9-5) for a match up on Friday, January 30 in Barrie. With a win over the Grizzlies, Durham will clinch a home postseason game.
Oshawa will be on the radar for all collegiate volleyball teams heading into February as Durham College is set to host the 2008-09 OCAA Men’s and Women’s Provincial Volleyball Championships. The event will run at the CRWC from February 27-28, 2009.
