Lords Volleyball split in Ottawa – Doris closing in on history

Weekend Results:

Women’s Volleyball
Algonquin defeated Durham 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23)
Durham defeated La Cite 3-2 (25-13, 25-23, 24-26, 16-25, 19-17)

Men’s Volleyball
Algonquin defeated Durham 3-1 (25-13, 17-25, 25-20, 26-24)
Durham defeated La Cite 3-1 (25-17, 24-26, 25-20, 25-19)

Ottawa, Ont. – The Durham College men’s and women’s volleyball teams managed to pick up splits in their nation capital road-trips as they each picked up wins over the La Cite Coyotes on Saturday afternoon.

The women’s team is now 9-5 on the year and is in third place in the East Region. Saturday’s game was a total team effort with several players recording 10+ points. Freshman Julie Hakkesteegt (Brighton, Ont.) led the team with 20 points (12 kills, 7 blocks, 1 ace) while Kristen Conner (Oshawa, Ont.) had 19 points (13 kills, 4 aces, 2 blocks).

Captain Mandi Doris (Ajax, Ont.) picked up ten blocks in two games this weekend, bringing her season total to 60. She is now one block shy of the OCAA single season record of 61 blocks in a year set by Mohawk’s Courtney Warren during the 2002-03 season. She also has 136 blocks in her career for the green and gold, moving her into third spot all-time in the OCAA charts. Tracey Smith of Niagara College holds the career record of 147 followed by Courtney Warren of Mohawk with 139.

One the men’s side of the court, DC improved to 8-4 on the year, good enough for fourth place in the East Region. In a rematch of the Fleming Invitational semi-finals, the Lords were able to defeat La Cite by a final score of 3-1. They did not have the same fortune on Friday night as the provincially number one ranked Algonquin Thunder defeated DC 3-1.

The teams will now look ahead to Tuesday, as they take on the Trent University Excalibur at the CRWC. First serve for the women’s game is at 6 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m.
