Slow start haunts DC Women’s Basketball

Women’s Basketball: Algonquin defeated Durham 57-44

Oshawa, Ont. – The Durham College women’s basketball team could not comeback after a sluggish start as the Algonquin Thunder rolled to a 57-44 victory over the Lords on Saturday afternoon at the CRWC.

DC found themselves down by 22 points (32-10) midway through the first half as Algonquin came out flying to open the game. Showing a lot of pride, Durham chipped away at the Algonquin lead and to eventually came within five points (48-43) of the Thunder in the late stages of the game.

With their lead slipping away, the Thunder would manage to find a way regroup and hold off a Lords comeback as they won by a final score 57-44.

Members of the Durham Basketball Association were in attendance showing their support for the green and gold.

Ashley Visser (Uxbridge, Ont.) was having a big game for the Lords with 10 points, four rebounds and three steals before suffering an injury that took her off the court and out of the game. Erin Emery (North Bay, Ont.) would finish the night with 14 points and six rebounds to lead the way for Durham. Kristen Hibbert of Algonquin led all scorers with 16 points.

With the win, Algonquin (3-7) jumps ahead of the Lords (2-8) for the final playoff position in the East Region. With four games remaining in their season, DC will have to find a way to go on a run if they hope to qualify for the post season.

The team’s quest for a playoff position will resume on Friday, January 23 at home against the Georgian Grizzlies for a 6 p.m. tip–off. It will also be a special night as the theme will be THINK PINK, as the women’s basketball team is looking to raise awareness and much needed funds for breast cancer research.
