Humber soars to the Killer Instinct Cup Title
Oshawa, Ont. – Two days of fantastic women’s volleyball wrapped up on Saturday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre as twelve teams took part in the 21st edition of the Durham College Killer Instinct Cup. When the final whistle was blown, it was the Humber Hawks of Etobicoke taking home the tournament title, defeating Lionel-Groulx of Ste-Thérèse, Quebec 2-1 in the championship finals.
For Humber, it was their fourth Killer Instinct Cup title in nine years, having won it back in 2001, 2003 and 2006. The Hawks had to be on top of their game to win this year’s crown as both playoff teams they met (Bois de Boulogne and Lionel-Groulx) are nationally ranked.
The championship final was a match to remember as it came down to wire with the Hawks defeating Lionel-Groulx 2-1, with set scores of 25-12, 22-25 and 15–13. In the semi-finals, the Hawks defeated Bois de Boulogne 2-1, winning by set scores of 25-22, 20-25 and 15-10. At the conclusion of the tournament, Landis Doyle of Humber was named tournament MVP (all award winners listed in the tournament recap below).
Durham had a solid day two as they won three of four sets in round robin action to finish second in pool B standings and advanced to the semi-finals. Unfortunately for Durham, they ran into Lionel-Groulx in the semi finals immediately following their final round robin match, and the Lords ran out of gas as they were defeated by the Nordiques 2-0. Injuries also played a key role in the match as Kristen Conner (Oshawa, Ont.) was sidelined due to an ankle injury suffered in the prior game.
This year marked the 21st anniversary of the Durham College women’s volleyball tournament and the 9th year in it’s current format. The DC Killer Instinct Cup has become highly regarded in the volleyball community and is one of the biggest and most anticipated invitational tournaments on the OCAA sports calendar.
Durham College is now set to host the OCAA Men’s and Women’s Provincial Volleyball Championship, scheduled to take place in Oshawa from February 27-28, 2009.
