Former Durham College golfer to be inducted into Oshawa’s Sports Hall of Fame
Oshawa, Ont. – The Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame recently announced that former Durham College golfer Ryan Hughes will be inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame.
Hughes will enter the Hall of Fame along with Gordon Mackenzie Myles (hockey player), Fred Whalley (builder), Jim Hinkson (lacrosse player and coach) and Andrew David Stewart (baseball player) on Wednesday, May 26, 2009 at the GMC.
Hughes is no stranger to Hall of Fame ceremonies as he was inducted into the Durham College Sports Hall of Fame on April 7th, 2000 as well as the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Hall of Fame on April, 30th, 2003.
He began his athletic career at Durham College in 1988, playing a total of four years with Durham until 1992. He very quickly became the best golfer to ever play in school history. He captured the Individual Gold Medal and led his team to the school’s first ever OCAA Golf Championship in 1988. He would repeat the accomplishment again the following year and then accomplished what no other collegiate golfer has ever done, when he won his unprecedented fourth consecutive OCAA Gold Medal - a record that will most likely never be broken.
Hughes went onto to coach the Durham College Golf Team and led them to two more OCAA Championships in 1992 and 1995. Throughout his career, he has earned an incredible eight OCAA Championship Gold Medals both as a player and as a Coach.
The athletic department would like to congratulate Ryan for all of his accomplishments.
