Durham College celebrates a true legend

Oshawa, Ont. – Former players, managers, coaches, staff, friends, family, OCAA delegates, officials and members of the media were all out at Shagwell’s on the Ridge to celebrate the twenty-four year career of former Durham College women’s volleyball head coach Stan Marchut.

"It was a very special night on our campus Saturday in celebration of a Legend,” stated Ken Babcock, Athletic Director. “What a wonderful turnout! People drove long distances, with some alumni players flying in from out of province for this special surprise event in honour of the winningest coach in Canadian College volleyball history. It was a night full of memories, championship lore, gold medals, exceptional tributes and many, many great stories."

The night was a celebration to honour Marchut, as all of the attendees had a chance to look back and reflect on their days spent with the legendary coach.

Babcock shared some fond memories he had of the longtime head coach, while reciting some of the messages that poured in when people heard about the event. OCAA marketing and communications coordinator and former Durham College volleyball player Lindsay Bax spoke on behalf of the OCAA, emphasizing the impact Marchut had on volleyball across the province. DC Sports Hall of Famer and a member of the inaugural volleyball team at Durham College, Leslie Lepp spoke on behalf of Marchut’s former athletes, sharing plenty of memorable stories, while talking about what having Stan apart of their lives has meant to all of them.

Players from all generations came out to the event, including several members of the 1985-86 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) bronze medal winning Durham Lords (pictured).

It was a night to remember as Durham College celebrated a true legend.
