DC closes out the year with a win – playoffs are up next!

Men’s Basketball: Durham defeated Loyalist 97-59

Belleville, Ont. – The Durham College men’s basketball team closed out their regular season on Tuesday night with a 97-59 victory over the Loyalist Lancers at the Lancerdome.

The Lords finish the year with a 16-4 conference record and will have to wait until Wednesday to find out whether or not they will receive a bye to the OCAA quarter finals, or have to play this weekend in the qualifying round.

If Fleming (15-4) defeats St. Lawrence (15-4) on Wednesday night, Durham will finish second place in the East Region and will host a quarter final game on the weekend of February 28. If St. Lawrence defeats Fleming, Durham will finish third place in the East Region and host a qualifying game on Saturday, February 21 (2 p.m.) at the CRWC.

Finishing with a conference record of 16-4, this season has marked the Lords highest winning percentage since 1997/98 when the team when 10-2.

As they did in their first game of the season, the Lords dominated from start to finish in Tuesday’s game winning by a total of 38 points. Durham defeated Loyalist 80-53 in their first game of the season back dating back to October 21, 2008.

Anthony Batchelor (Markham, Ont.) played his final regular season game with the green and gold ending a remarkable collegiate career. Batchelor set provincial records in almost every offensive category as he finished his career with 1,833 points, leaving the court as the OCAA all-time leading scorer. The one trophy missing from Batchelor’s collection is an OCAA Championship, something the Lords hope to bring home this March.

Also playing his final regular season game for the Lords was senior Evan Browne (Grass Lake, MI), who scored 25 points on the night, going 4-for-5 from three point territory. Browne finishes his career 8th all time in DC scoring with 630 career points and second all-time in three point field goals (87) .

Freshman Eric Smith (Ajax, Ont.) scored 24 points and added seven rebounds in the game, finishing the year leading all OCAA freshmen in scoring (18.3 PPG), rebounds (197) and total points (348).
