DC Men’s Basketball knocks off undefeated St. Lawrence College
- Lords sink the Vikings Ship -
Men’s Basketball: Durham defeated St. Lawrence 91-84
Oshawa, Ont. – If they have not already, teams around Ontario better take notice of the Durham College men’s basketball team as they beat the previously undefeated and number two ranked St. Lawrence Vikings 91-84 in front of the hometown crowd on Tuesday night.
The score in the first half of the game resembled a roller coaster ride as the Lords went though a bunch of ups and downs within the first twenty minutes. DC got out to a hot start taking an early lead, but St. Lawrence would fight back to take a commanding lead of their own. Heading into half time, Durham managed to fight back into the game as the Vikings held a slim 46-43 lead.
The second half was very entertaining as both teams were looking to come out of the night with the win. Behind strong three point shooting (6-for-8), the Lords would out score St. Lawrence 48-38 in the second frame to pick up the big 91-84 victory.
Free throws were a big factor in the win as Durham got to the line 19 times, converting it into 12 points. St. Lawrence on the other hand only went to the charity stripe five times for a total of two points. DC played well discipline defence as the Vikings did not even attempt one free throw for the entire first half.
Anthony Batchelor (Markham, Ont.) had a huge night for DC scoring 23 points while adding six rebounds, four steals & two assists. The OCAA all-time scoring leader shot 53 per cent from the field including 4-for-6 from three point land.
Evan Browne (Grass Lake, MI) also had the hot hand for Durham matching Batchelor’s 23 point performance. Browne was clutch from the free throw line going 6-for-7 in the game. Eric Smith (Ajax, Ont.) recorded his second consecutive double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
The Lords remain undefeated at home with a 3-0 conference record this season. Sitting at 6-3, DC jumps into a three way tie for third place in the East Region while St. Lawrence drops to 6-1 on the year, suffering their first loss of the season.
Durham’s next action will be in 2009 at the George Brown New Years Classic from January 2-3 in Toronto. The Lords will resume conference action on Tuesday, January 6 as they host the George Brown Huskies at 8 p.m.
