DURHAM LORDS GOLF COACH READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD

Oshawa, ONT. – Longtime head coach of the Durham Lords varsity golf program Mike Duggan has been selected as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2008 World University Golf Championship scheduled to take place in Sun City, South Africa from September 2-5.

Duggan will be in good company at the 12th running of the games as he joins an elite coaching staff comprised of Head Coach Ray Chateau (Humber College) along with assistant coaches Carla Munch (University of Waterloo), Bryan Carbery (University of Victoria) and Karen Danylchuk (The University of Western Ontario).

"This is a fantastic opportunity and I'm honoured to be selected as a member of the coaching staff," commented Duggan. “I look forward to working with the other coaches and all of the athletes in representing Canada at the Games.”

Duggan has been the head coach of the Durham Lords varsity golf program for the past ten seasons after helping the college re-introduced the program in the 1996-97 season. Durham golfers have had consistent success on the provincial and national level under Duggan’s leadership.

”This is a great accomplishment for Mike,” said Ken Babcock, Athletic Director. “We are all very proud of his success. He has worked extremely hard to put himself in a position to be considered for a role of this nature. This not only reflects well on Mike, but it reflects well on the caliber of our Durham College Varsity Golf program and tradition of success.”

The Lords have won three overall provincial team titles (men’s in 2004 and 2005, women’s in 2005), with the men’s team earning a medal in six straight OCAA championships from 2001-2006. The Lords have also participated in seven straight CCAA national championships with the men’s team winning three straight silver medals from 2004-2006 and the women’s team winning medals in 2004 (bronze) and 2005 (silver).

Lords golfers have also had plenty of individual success under Duggan’s tutelage. Tyler Martin won provincial titles in 2004 and 2006 and a national title in 2005 while Will Mitchell won a provincial title in 2005 and a national title in 2006. Both are now playing professionally on the Canadian Tour. Stephanie Brown also brought an individual provincial gold medal to Durham in 2005.

Team Canada will consist of eleven golfers (6 men and 5 women) who recently qualified for the team at the Royal Canadian Golf Association Canadian University/College Championship that took place from May 27 to May 30 at the Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, BC.

The team will depart for South Africa this week. Golfers will have a chance to take part in two practice rounds on prior to the event. Both courses to be played during the World Championships were designed by golf legend Gary Player.
