Gates was born in Markham in 1950 and began a terrific collegiate
career at Durham in 1972. A unique four sport talent in
the mid 1970's at Durham College. It is a distinct rarity
to have played on four college teams in once season, but Al
managed the feat playing the following: Basketball 1972-74,
Soccer 1972-74, Curling 1974 and 1975 and Golf 1973 and 1974.
This feat is simply amazing in the OCAA and probably will never
be matched. he was one of the most talented all-round
athletes to ever attend Durham College and was deservingly named
Durham's Athlete of the Year in 1974-75. Away from the
playing field he was involved with the Durham College Student
Athletic Council in 1974-75. A remarkable individual who
merits Hall of Fame status.
