Augusto
Duquesne was born in Havana, Cuba in 1969 and began his storied involvement
at Durham College in 1994 following the World Basketball Championships
in Toronto. Making the difficult decision to leave his
family and friends behind in his homeland, Augusto enrolled
at Durham in ESL and quickly established himself as a force
in the OCAA Basketball World. During his three year collegiate
career, he twice led the OCAA in scoring (94-95 and 95-96);
he was named an OCAA All-Star twice; OCAA Championship All-Star
twice; plus being named a CCAA All-Canadian, not once but, twice
(94-95 and 95-96). An excellent “team first” personality
allowed Augusto to succeed regularly on the court. During
the 1995-96 season he set the Durham College single game scoring
record of 40 points. He also set the OCAA All-Star Game record
for most points in a game with 42, that same year on his home
court. Augusto’s college career was well documented by
the Toronto Star, TSN, CTV and many other media outlets and
certainly the national attention was well deserved. His
success both on the court and establishing himself personally
and academically in his new country are remarkable stories.
In 1995-96 Augusto was named DC Male Athlete of the Year.
In his final year (96-97) he helped lead the Lords to the school’s
first National Championship title in Men’s Basketball!
No doubt the best College Basketball player to ever wear a Durham
College uniform.
